Black Grace marks its 30th anniversary with a powerful double bill uniting the past, present, and future of dance.
Audiences will experience If Ever There Was A Time a world premiere by Founding Artistic Director Neil Ieremia, ONZM, performed alongside Paul Taylor’s seminal Esplanade, celebrating its 50th anniversary.
As he develops his latest work, Neil Ieremia reflects: “My new work, ‘If Ever There Was A Time’ is to do with some universal truths. It’s about the things that we have in common and the things that connect us rather than the things that divide us. At times it’s a desperate lament, a pulsating charge, a soaring prayer of praise. This is my personal protest, my quiet revolution.”

Esplanade is one of modern dance’s most acclaimed and influential works, and this season marks the first time a New Zealand company has been licensed to perform Taylor’s choreography. The result is a historic cultural collaboration bridging continents and generations.
Dynamic, diverse, and deeply moving, this unmissable experience celebrates Black Grace’s artistry and legacy while honouring one of modern dance’s greatest masters.

The energy, connection and joy/anger/humour of this stunning production is not suited to words - not English ones, anyway. This was a production where my kinetic soul was transported, and I felt like I was in the troop. A beautiful synthesis of music and movement, why only 2 performances?! I wanted to go again!
Each performance was delightful and different. The choreographers’ explanations added to the performances. I would be hard pressed to pick a “best dance”. Thank you
