Against La Dolce Vita styling of 1950s Italy, court jester Rigoletto delights in making enemies of husbands and fathers while his boss, Duke of Mantua, is a callous playboy. (Yet somehow, it’s the duke who has the nerve to sing ‘La donna e mobile’ – women are fickle!)
Giuseppe Verdi’s opera, a smash hit since its debut, is brimming with crowd-pleasing melodies and lush orchestrations. ‘La donna e mobile’ is the hit but the composer preferred ‘Bella figlia dell’amore’, a sensuous depiction of the characters’ motives. “I never expect to do better,” Verdi said.
The jester finds it less funny when he’s cursed by a humiliated parent, and the duke meets Gilda, Rigoletto’s beautiful daughter.

It was my first time going to an Opera show. I didn't expect it to be this good! The performers were amazing and talented. The stage was well set. Eventhough the show was in Italian, the performers did a great job at convening feelings and emotions. I may have shed a few tears.
Great show. What talent! Loved the subtitles. Rows of seats too close together which spoils the comfort level.

Booking for opera was first class— website easy to navigate and ticket downloaded easily and moved to my wallet as anticipated. My only complaint was getting two possibly three special messages from Ticketmaster telling me of changed app and so I ought to download again to be sure of ease of entry. Fortunately I had plenty of time to check with Very helpful Ticketmaster staff at Aotea centre who told me my ticket was fine— and praises be it proved to be so at the door. Please do not bother app nervous folk with unessery messages. Otherwise all good and the opera and venue were superb! Thanks
