A lovely celebration of a famous tale and theatre combined

by Christine on 16/11/2024The Civic, Auckland - Auckland

I loved every minute, from the pre-show fun with the characters interacting with the audience. To then the rest of the show which was incredible. Of course, I am coming in pretty biased because I love LOTRs, I love musicals, and theatre, so I was pretty excited. I was blown away! The set was incredible and was used in so many cool ways that I don't think I'll see anything like that again, the lighting was superb, the singing, choreography and music was excellent and really tied into the story well - I loved that there was no set orchestra and the actors had instruments assigned. I loved the way they did the Nazgûl, Balrog, Shelob and the Orcs, they were pretty epic! Of course, the acting was superb! It's a lot of pressure bringing these iconic characters to life, but all of the actors did justice to their characters, and it was cool to see a fresh take on them. All of the actors carried themselves so well and showed incredible skill to not only act but sing, dance, play an instrument and pull off cool stunt fights, absolutely incredible, I take my hat off to them all, especially Gollum! Special shout out to Spencer Davis Milford and Michael Kurowski (Frodo&Sam) who are amazing at portraying the bond and the love, they had brilliant chemistry. And a big shoutout to the crew and creative team, too! This was not an easy task putting on a show like this, it's big! I like that it's a fresh take and a new perspective on the much loved tale. Again, I'm biased, but it is an incredible stage show that everyone should see while it's here.

    Fantastic show and service

by Cam on 14/11/2024The Civic, Auckland - Auckland

I was a bit sceptical about a ‘Lord of the Rings’ musical but it more than exceeded expectations. The staging and sound were magnificent with an enormously talented cast, who could not only act, sing and dance but played instruments as well. My favourite was the young guy who often had a cello strapped over his shoulder. Gollum was a real athlete and show stopper! Front of house staff were stunning. I am usually sceptical about house wine but the Pinot Noir (Greystone, Waipara) was so nice and good value. Well worth the round trip from Whangārei.

    Unbelievable!!!

by Nick on 10/11/2024The Civic, Auckland - Auckland

Honestly, this kind of quality of production is usually reserved for London, New York, or Sydney. We are SO LUCKY to have this touring production visit New Zealand for a limited season. I'd encourage anyone who loves theatre, musicals, talented performers, or the LOTR to get a ticket and be there. Find a way. Grab a baby sitter. Take a day off. It's worth it! Outstanding performances from Gandalf, Gollum, Galadriel and Arwen. Just wow. All of the performers are multi instrumentalists, and the music is live and on stage. The performers are regularly in the stalls too, and interact and chat with the audience. Magical.
