Brahms’ masterpiece, the Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, makes for compelling listening because of the unique way Brahms combines the two soloists with the orchestra, and the result is more like a Romantic symphony than a traditional concerto. Soloists in this ‘symphonic’ concerto are the NZSO’s Concertmaster Vesa-Matti Leppanen and their Principal Cellist Andrew Joyce. Also from the NZSO is conductor Hamish McKeich, their Principal Conductor in Residence. He is also the Royal NZ Ballet’s Principal Conductor. Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 was composed in happy circumstances and this symphony’s cheerful and optimistic melodies also reflect Dvorak’s love of Bohemia and its folk music. Opening the programme is MacCunn’s Overture, an unashamedly romantic and lyrical depiction of the Scottish landscape
