Australia's Bush Balladeer
In 2010, John Williamson celebrates forty years in the recording industry. During his career he has received twenty four Golden Guitars, two ARIA awards, released thirty nine albums, ten videos, seven DVDs and three impressive books of stories and lyrics. John is frequently referred to as an Australian icon and has become synonymous with his iconic song ‘True Blue'. His music takes people on journeys through this great Australian continent, which continues to be the inspiration for most of his best known and most loved songs.
From his musical family beginnings in the Victorian Mallee, to defining the Australian character through song, John Williamson has achieved musical success and respect internationally and nationwide, writing some 400 songs and selling in excess of 3.8 million albums in Australia alone.
It was in 1970 that John emerged from his own wheat farm at Croppa Creek, 100 kilometres south of the Queensland border and set ablaze the Australian music charts with his No.1 smash hit ‘Old Man Emu', off the back of a winning performance on Australian TV talent show New Faces. But it was in 1986 with the release of his triple-platinum-selling album ‘Mallee Boy' that his place in Australian music history was assured.
Look at some of the most significant events in Australia in the past few decades and he has performed there. The Sydney 2000 Olympics, numerous Bledisloe Cup matches, Sir Donald Bradman's memorial, the Rugby World Cup, the first Bali Bombing Memorial service . . . the list goes on. In January 2010 Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, recognised John's 40 year contribution and referred to him as ‘one of our country's most iconic and beloved artists'.
John is known for his dedication to Australian causes close to his heart. He is involved with many conservation projects, including his proud association with Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo and their research through Wildlife Warriors Worldwide. He actively campaigns to save Australia's unique environment by supporting Landcare, The Wilderness Society and Bush Heritage. He has raised substantial funds for the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital through his classic song ‘Goodbye Blinky Bill' as well as increasing awareness for the preservation and protection of bilbies, malleefowls and Mary River turtles. Most recently, John has become actively involved with Variety the Children's Charity. As President of the Country Music Association of Australia he encourages young Australian musicians to be proud of their own country and heritage.
