For the first and only time in New Zealand, "Disney: The Magic of Animation" will be exhibiting at Tākina, Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre, from 20 February to 13 July 2025.
“Disney: The Magic of Animation" explores almost a century of Disney magic. Over 600 original hand selected sketches, digital animations, and unique artworks will be on display from the Walt Disney Animations Research Library. Guests will get a rare glimpse behind the scenes of the Walt Disney Animation Studios and how the world’s most beloved characters and stories have evolved on paper and screen, from 1928 to today.
From Mickey Mouse's first appearance in Steamboat Willie (1928) to the modern wonders of Moana 2 (2024), this is the first official public exhibition to include works from Disney's latest animated film.
The exhibition features interactive animation stations for young and old to practice their colouring magic, costumes for the little ones, Belle and the Beast’s ballroom where you can take a spin, and Alice forever falling through an immersive projection experience.
You'll also encounter beloved characters at different stages of their development from conception through to on-screen animations, including Sorcerer Mickey from Fantasia (1940), Alice from Alice in Wonderland (1951), Ariel from The Little Mermaid (1989), Belle from Beauty and the Beast (1991), Simba from The Lion King (1994), Elsa and Anna from Frozen (2013) and Frozen 2 (2019), Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde from Zootopia (2016), and Raya from Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), among others.
Whether you are a lifelong Disney fan or new to its magic, this exhibition is a must-see event. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to experience Disney like never before.

Children of all ages will enjoy, 5 to 95. I took a group of residents from Parkwood Retirement Village and everyone thought it was great. They had their phones out taking photos and kept circling looking at pictures over and over. A well thought out display. Some of the movies we knew some we had heard about and other newer movies we are going home to watch. Very interesting seeing the changes over the years and realizing how early on they started making cartoons. Well worth the money and was not busy during the week but weekends could well be.
It was a great experience, I took it all in while seeing the magic of what made Disney great. I would definitely go see this again.
