For one huge weekend in February, Sport and Art collide in New Zealand's culture capital. That's when Wellington hosts the NZI Sevens - a feast of rugby teamed with a festival of entertainment, cheered on by legions of fans dressed up.
Staged at Wellington's showcase Westpac Stadium over two days and nights, organisers have ensured there's no chance of boredom. Stacked between games are parades and entertainment, while fans create their own fun by choosing teams, like the crowd pleasing Kenyans, to cheer on.
It's easy to see that while it only kicked off for the first time in 2000, the Wellington event has become one of the leading tournaments on the IRB Sevens circuit. The attendance numbers reached capacity in year two of the tournament's history and has continued to attract more than 35,000 people each year. The 2009 tournament sold out in less than ten minutes, which reinforces the country's interest in this great annual event.
