About Royal New Zealand Ballet

The Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) performs an eclectic repertoire of dance, for national and international audiences, with a distinctively New Zealand style.

The Ryman Healthcare Season of The Nutcracker

Christmas comes but once a year, and for lovers of festive tales and seasonal charm, Christmas 2018 will be extra special, as the RNZB stages their first national tour of The Nutcracker since 2010.  Sure to captivate all ages, this treasured production from your national ballet company makes a special Christmas gift for the whole family.

RNZB 2019 Season

Brand new works, beloved stories and fresh takes on the classics make up the RNZB’s 2019 Season, a whole year of inspiring dance that you won’t want to miss. Featuring thrilling new works in the RNZB’s New Choreographic Season; Black Swan, White Swan, a magnificent re-telling of ballet’s classic Swan Lake; mixed bill Bold Moves; and a new version of Hansel & Gretel, a timeless tale to enchant young and old.

Choreographic Series

The creation of a new dance work is a voyage of discovery for both dancers and audience. The RNZB’s New Choreographic Series will present specially-commissioned world premieres, tailor-made for our dancers - an opportunity for audiences to experience ground-breaking, original dance works by celebrated choreographers from around the world.

Black Swan, White Swan

The Royal New Zealand Ballet’s new production Black Swan, White Swan is a magnificent re-telling of ballet’s most enduring classic, Swan Lake. This stripped down, elemental version of the story focuses on Siegfried’s struggle with ideal love, pure evil, temptation, and most of all, himself. This is a Swan Lake for the 21st century.

Bold Moves

Choreographers from three continents, sharing New Zealand stages this winter. George Balanchine’s Serenade: 28 dancers moving through time and space, supremely structured yet somehow free. William Forsythe’s Artifact II: a blast of neon and strobe. Stand to Reason by Andrea Schermoly: drama, drive, pulsating beauty - a powerful new commission celebrating the boldness of the brave women who won the vote.

Hansel & Gretel

For Christmas 2019, the Royal New Zealand Ballet is proud to present Hansel & Gretel, a new two-act ballet by Loughlan Prior, with a specially commissioned score by Claire Cowan. This major premiere brings together many of New Zealand’s creative talents to tell a timeless tale for audiences young and old.
